Pre-Registration; Drop/Add Period; Final Registrations
Pre-registration for upper-level courses and first-year spring courses takes place approximately one to two months before the beginning of each semester. In most cases, students may drop and add courses during the first two weeks of classes. Course changes after the drop/add period can be made only with the approval of the course instructor and the Registrar. The Registrar’s Office maintains updated course and seminar enrollment lists. The courses in which you are enrolled appear on Penn InTouch, the Course Portal and on Canvas.
Lottery; Waiting List
The Registrar’s Office manages the selection of students for courses and seminars. Students will be selected by a random lottery from those wishing to enroll. Students closed out of a course or seminar will be ranked on a waiting list. A student may be admitted to a course, over and above the limited enrollment and ahead of other students on the course waiting list, if, in the written opinion of the instructor, the addition of this student will enhance the educational value of the course. For example, the instructor of a seminar in communications law may believe that a student who has worked for a television station would enhance the seminar discussion with the benefit of his/her practical experience.
Departure from Lottery
Departure from the random selection process may be justified whenever the students will be required to render a service, such as the representation of clients or appearing in court, requiring particular experience or special qualifications. The criteria for selection of students in other than a random lottery must be approved by the Educational Program Committee. (Faculty Minutes, April 16, 1973)
Students may be asked to put their names on seating charts for courses meeting in Law School lecture halls. Charts may be distributed in class by the instructor or you will be asked to select a seat using the seating chart function on the Course Portal or on Canvas.
Please see the Registrar section for course registration details.
