Information for Penn Law Students

Welcome WRLS volunteers.  Thank you for your interest in the Women’s Legal Assistance Project!

Who we are:

Criminal justice issues are just the tip of the iceberg for the majority of women convicted of a criminal offense in Philadelphia. These women desperately need legal support tailored to their specialized needs in housing, employment, custody, and benefits. Women’s Re-entry Legal Services is a student pro bono project that aims to address these issues by providing holistic legal support and education to these women.

How to get involved:

Public Benefits Workshops - As a volunteer, you will give presentations to women at our partner organizations about how their public benefits may be affected by previous criminal convictions.

Court Costs and Fines Workshops - You will also educate women on how to decrease and/or pay off their court costs and fines.

Case Management - WRLS is working with Community Legal Services and the Philadelphia Public Defender Office to begin a direct service project.  As a member of a team of volunteers, you will take on clients and file petitions to reduce bail costs.

Training:

In order to participate you must complete  a training.   Training details will be disseminated via e-mail through our listserv.  To be added to our listserv please contact our Brandi Lupo, blupo@law.upenn.edu.
