Dominik Brodowski

Rosenheim, Germany

Class Year:

LLM, 2007

Prior Education:

Erste juristische Staatsprüfung, Frühjahr 2006, Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen, Germany (J.D. equivalent)

What I Did Before Law School:

Actually, I started studying at Penn Law two days after graduating in Germany - so there was not much time in between! During my studies in Germany, I worked as a student research assistant for a Professor of Criminal law, and this work sparked my interested in criminal law.

Why I Chose Penn Law:

The three top reasons why I chose Penn Law are its interdisciplinary approach, its strong faculty in criminal and constitutional law, and the encouraging, supportive community.

My Best Experience at Penn Law:

Probably my best experience at Penn Law were some of the lectures outside of the course schedules – be it the former Chief Justice of South Africa’s Supreme Court, Justice Goldstone; or the current Chief Justice of Israel, Justice Beinisch, to name two examples.

Professor Who influenced Me Most:

This is a very tough question to answer, for all of the professors influenced me, but each one in his different way. Professor Leo Katz, though, has caused me to think about law and its philosophical background from a wholly different perspective - most exciting!

My Favorite Course:

Again, I can’t do justice to the courses I attended if I pick one out. But Professor Paul Robinson’s classes deserve some special mentioning – because of the great discussions we had about our disagreements on criminal law theory.

My Favorite Philadelphia Moment:

That was possibly entering the Kimmel Center concert hall for the first time, and then listening to Lang Lang performing Chopin’s first piano concert – wonderful.

My Extracurricular Activities at Penn Law:

Besides listening to many classical concerts, I ran with the Penn Running Club and took part in outdoor climbing and skiing trips with the Department of Recreation.

My Favorite Place or Activity on the University Campus:

That’s probably the greens in front of the Van Pelt Library – where I was doing most of my reading assignments lying in the sun.
