Jai Dehadrai

Hometown: New Delhi, India

Class Year:  2013

Prior Education:

BS.L. (University of Pune)

LL.B. (University of Pune)

What I Did Before Law School:

I worked as a Research Assistant to the Chief Justice of India and thereafter as a Litigation Attorney with the New Delhi law firm Karanjawala & Co.

Why I Chose Penn Law:

I was very fortunate that Penn accepted me, since it offered the unparalleled opportunity to learn from some of the most accomplished law professors amongst all the Ivy League schools. I chose Penn over some other very good law schools because to my mind no other school offered top-rated courses in both Corporate Law and Litigation. I felt I would greatly benefit from these opportunities. I also knew that I would enjoy the cross-learning possibilities with Penn Law’s proximity to Wharton.

My Best Experience at Penn Law:

My most thrilling experience was when I argued before a 3-judge bench as part of my final examination grade in Professor Raymond Ripple’s Appellate Advocacy class. Professor Ripple is a kind teacher but a tough judge!

Professor Who Influenced Me Most:

Professor Shanin Specter inspired me the most. I have written about my experience in his class here -

My Favorite Course:

  • Trial Advocacy with Professor Shanin Specter and Global Anti-Trust with Professor Yoo – at Penn Law.
  •  Corporate Diplomacy with Dr. Sanjay Patnaik – at Wharton.

My Favorite Philadelphia Moment:

The look of pride on my parents faces after my graduation ceremony.

What I’m Most Proud Of:

I was very happy when my research work on landmark Indian precedent was accepted for publishing.  Friends I made at Penn Law helped me immensely to complete the Æquabilis project.

My Extracurricular Activities at Penn Law:

I enjoyed rowing and the live jazz band at the Art Museum. The ultramodern gym facility was a great stress buster.

My Favorite Place or Activity on the University Campus:

In the summer, the terrace deck atop Golkin Hall was a great place to spend time with friends and even study. The New Deck Tavern across from the law school was a close second!
