Jay Finkelstein

Jay Gary Finkelstein, a partner at DLA Piper LLP (US), has practiced corporate and securities law for over 30 years, focusing on international and domestic negotiated transactions, mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, securities offerings, corporate structuring, strategic contractual relationships, and general corporate law. His practice has involved matters in a wide variety of industries, including defense, hospitality, financial services, real estate, franchised businesses and high-tech and emerging growth enterprises. He also represents numerous nonprofit organizations. He works closely with DLA lawyers in international offices throughout the world to coordinate the delivery of legal services for international transactional matters.

Mr. Finkelstein holds adjunct faculty positions at Stanford, Berkeley, and Georgetown Law Schools and has been teaching international business negotiations since 2003. His teaching focuses on introducing law students to transactional legal practice through experiential and collaborative pedagogy involving an extended simulation of a negotiated international transaction which immerses students in the legal aspects and process of negotiating and documenting the business deal. He has been a guest professor at Addis Ababa University (Ethiopia), Tel Aviv University (Israel), IDC (Israel), Sun Yat-sen University (China), Southern Cross University (Australia), and Baltic Federal University (Russia) and has conducted numerous negotiations trainings for government lawyers throughout East Africa.

He is the co-author (with Prof. Daniel Bradlow) of Negotiating Business Transactions: An Extended Simulation Course (Wolters Kluwer, Aspen Coursebook Series, 2013) and “Training Law Students to be International Transactional Lawyers Using an Extended Simulation to Educate Law Students about Business Transactions,” Pepperdine Journal of Business, Entrepreneurship and the Law, 2007. He is also the co-author (with Prof. Karl Okamoto) of Simulations: Collaborative Experiential Learning, Transactions: The Tennessee Journal of Business Law (Special 2013, No. 3) (based on a symposium presentation at the 2012 Emory Conference on Transactional Law). He is the author of Practice in the Academy: Creating Practice Aware Law Graduates, Journal of Legal Education, Vol. 64, No. 4 (May 2015).

Mr. Finkelstein is a graduate of Princeton University (AB, 1975, magna cum laude) and Harvard Law School (JD, 1978, magna cum laude).
