Elizabeth Freed L’14

Elizabeth’s commitment to advocating for marginalized communities long precedes her time at Penn Carey Law. While an undergraduate at New York University, Elizabeth volunteered with the Fortune Society, preparing previously incarcerated individuals for the GED, and the Restaurant Opportunities Center of New York, advocating on behalf of immigrant restaurant workers in New York City. Following graduation, Elizabeth lived in Israel for two years, where she engaged in civil rights and refugee advocacy work.

While at Penn Carey Law, Elizabeth served on the boards of the Penn Carey Law Immigrant Rights Project, coordinating casework opportunities for students at immigrant rights organizations throughout Pennsylvania. Elizabeth also served as the Pardon Clinic Coordinator of the Criminal Record Expungement Project, helping individuals navigate the expungement and clemency processes. During her 1L summer, Elizabeth represented detained immigrants in removal proceedings with the Capital Area Immigrants’ Rights Coalition. The following summer, Elizabeth split her time between Brooklyn Defender Services in New York and Kairys, Rudovsky, Messing & Feinberg in Philadelphia, focusing on criminal defense and civil rights litigation. After law school, Elizabeth plans to pursue a career in criminal defense and criminal-immigration law.
