CERL Welcomes New Board Member General Joseph Votel

November 04, 2019

The Law School’s Center for Ethics and the Rule of Law announced in November that General Joseph Votel, who retired from his 39-year military career in March 2019, has joined CERL’s Executive Board.

Gen. Votel most recently commanded U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), where he oversaw combatant operations in the Middle East and Central Asia and led the 79-member coalition that successfully liberated Iraq and Syria from the Islamic State. Before that, he served as commander of the U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM).

Gen. Votel has been a military leader of great courage and integrity. His deep understanding of the ethical dimensions of national security and war will help CERL be more relevant and create more impact.

Gen. Votel is a non-resident Senior Fellow with the Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs and a non-resident Distinguished Senior Fellow on National Security at the Middle East Institute (MEI). Last month, Votel joined the board of trustees for Noblis. Beginning in January 2020, he will serve as President and CEO of Business Executives for National Security (BENS), a nonpartisan nonprofit organization of industry executives.
