Penn Law’s chapter of the Federalist Society has received the 2019 award for Benjamin Franklin Breakout Chapter of the Year. Peter Redpath, Vice President and Director of the Student Division of the national organization in Washington, D.C. presented the award at Penn Law on March 20 during the chapter’s annual symposium. Chapter president Louis Capozzi L’19 accepted the award on behalf of the chapter.

“We are honored to receive the Benjamin Franklin Breakout Chapter of the Year Award,” said Capozzi. “Thanks to my great team of officers and members, the Penn Law chapter has accomplished great things during the past year. We quadrupled our chapter’s membership, hosted (on average) almost two events per week, established new pro bono projects, and facilitated discourse on important legal issues for the entire law school community. Speaking personally, working on behalf of the Federalist Society has been a tremendous honor.”

Penn Law’s Federalist Society is a group of conservative, libertarian, and independent law students, and the organization works to promote free discourse, individual liberties, and limited government. The group hosts events throughout the year, bringing respected judges, law professors, politicians, and others to Penn Law’s campus to discuss and debate major legal issues.

“I’m proud to see the hard work of Penn Law’s Federalist Society recognized by this award,” said Ted Ruger, Penn Law’s Dean and Bernard G. Segal Professor of Law. “The honor is well-deserved in light of the student chapter’s dedication to holding events that enrich the intellectual life of the Law School community.”

This year’s Penn Federalist Society symposium focused on “The Future of Federalism,” and featured a keynote address delivered by former Florida Governor Jeb Bush. During the past year, Penn Law’s Federalist Society has also hosted, among many others, Judge Jeffrey Sutton of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, Eugene Scalia, Judge Neomi Rao of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, and Judge Amy Coney Barrett of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.
