Building resilience can be key to success in the competitive legal market. As law schools typically emphasize numbers (grades and LSAT scores), there is a missed opportunity to build and test for “resilience, grit, or mental toughness.” In the Happy Lawyer, Nancy Levit and Douglas Linder encourage law students and lawyers to chose meaningful work, think about the way their work positively affects other people, connect with colleagues, and increase the frequency of ‘flow experiences.’ Law students can begin to adopt this approach while in law school by asking themselves, ‘what can I do for the profession?’. Instead of trying to weed people out for resilience, we should encourage law students to adopt a healthy attitude. Slaw has the full story.
