Penn Law team wins IP LawMeet regionals

November 03, 2015

Students from Penn Law won the Midwest Regionals of the 2015 Intellectual Property LawMeet, held at Loyola University Chicago School of Law.

On October 23, a team from Penn Law won the Midwest Regionals of the 2015 Intellectual Property LawMeet, held at Loyola University Chicago School of Law. Team members Adam Alperowicz L’17 and Nayha Zubair L’16 will next compete in the National Round, hosted by the Philadelphia offices of BakerHostetler on November 6.

Penn Law students Michael Siravo L’16 and Casey Kraning-Rush L’16 also competed at the LawMeet regionals.

“The IP LawMeet has been a great opportunity for Penn Law students over the last four years,” said Cynthia Dahl, Practice Associate Professor of Law and Director of Penn Law’s Detkin Intellectual Property and Technology Legal Clinic. “It gives students interested in transactional law the chance to think through a problem, consider how to best advocate for a client’s interests, and challenge themselves to compete on a national stage.”

In the competition, each team represented one of two sides in drafting and negotiating a term sheet over an artist’s contemplated performance for the half time show of the final major league football game of the season. The drafting stage took place over six weeks, with students drafting the term sheet, interviewing their clients, and marking up opposing teams’ drafts. The regional competition culminated with live negotiations.

“LawMeet has been an amazing learning experience, one that has really complemented my education at Penn Law by placing what I have learned in my intellectual property courses in the context of a negotiated business deal,” said Zubair. “Further, because the broad nature of this deal required Adam and me to look at the problem from a variety of different perspectives, it offered great insight into the practical side of lawyering and the need to balance legal risk with business demand.”

“For me, personally, LawMeet has been a fantastic building block, bridging the gap between my prior work experience in the music industry and providing me with hands on legal drafting and negotiating skills,” said Alperowicz.

In addition to advancing to the National Round, Alperowicz and Zubair also won Best Negotiation and Best Draft.

“I am so proud of both of our teams’ efforts, and I know they will reap the benefits of the lessons they have learned the next time they have to draft, negotiate and strategize on behalf of their clients,” added Dahl. “They will enter practice definitely ahead of the curve.”
