Iraqi Refugee Assistance Project

November 14, 2014

Students & faculty will be traveling to Beirut, Lebanon to participate in IRAP.

Fernando Chang-Muy will be traveling to Beirut, Lebanon with several Penn Law students to participate in the Iraqi Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP) from January 3–January 9. The U.N. estimates that there are over 1.1 million Syrian refugees in Lebanon, accounting for 25% of the country’s total population. The influx of unemployed, impoverished people has put a tremendous strain on the country’s resources and has ignited sectarian violence. Under the direction of Fernando Chang-Muy, Penn Law students will interview refugees, assess their candidacy for resettlement, and begin assisting them with the resettlement process. IRAP will seek to help those most at risk, including young women and LGBT refugees. In addition to several days of client intake, this group will visit the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and meet with Caritas Lebanon, the International Rescue Committee, and the Norwegian Refugee Council.
