On Tuesday, October 14, Penn Law’s Office of Career Planning and Professionalism hosted its annual 1L Summer Experience Fair. Second-year students who worked in various sectors in the legal field last summer were available to speak with the 1Ls about their experiences and the summer job search process.

Each year, the event shows 1L students the variety of options available for summer jobs after their 1L year, and helps facilitate networking between first-year students and upperclassmen. Additionally, the fair introduces the 1Ls to the CP&P staff, who will officially start to work with them later this month.

The fair was divided into different categories of internship opportunities, such as “in-house,” “academia,” and “public interest.” 2L students who worked in each field were there to answer questions about the application process and the different types of summer assignments, while CP&P staff members were also available to meet students.

“It is reassuring to hear about people who have done something you’re interested in,” said Elizabeth Levitan, a current Penn Law 1L. “I’m interested in public interest, so it was especially great to hear from people in that field.”

Chelsea Fish, a 2L sitting at the international opportunities table worked in South Africa after her 1L year. She attended the Summer Experience Fair last year.

“It was really helpful because you get to meet people working in similar organizations,” she said, “which really helped me in the application process.”

The 2L students discussed the range of their summer opportunities, from working with Penn Law professors to working at Twitter or working for a law firm.

“In-house gives you business experience you don’t get at a judicial internship,” said Brett Schwab, a former Philadelphia 76ers intern.

Additionally, some 2L students referenced help they received in the application process from Penn Law alumni.
