Who has access: Penn Law faculty, current students, and staff.

How do we access it: At NYTimes.com and through smartphone apps. Registration is required.

Things to know before registering:

  • You must register from on campus. You may access NYTimes.com from anywhere after the initial registration.
  • You must register using your Law School email address. You may change it to another email address after the initial registration.
    • If you already have a NYTimes.com account tied to your Penn Law email address:
      • If you have a paid subscription, you must cancel it prior to registering for Law School access. You will not be reimbursed, so please time your cancellation accordingly. To cancel, contact Customer Care at (800) 591-9233. After canceling your subscription, you can add the Penn Law group access to your account. See below for instructions on how to do so.
      • If you already have a free account tied to your Penn Law email address, you will not need to create a new account. The Penn Law group access can be added to your existing account. See below for instructions on how to do so.

How to register:

  • From on campus, go to http://www.nytimes.com/grouppass
  • If you already have a NYTimes.com account tied to your Penn Law email address, select “Log In to Continue” and sign in with your Penn Law email address and password.
  • If you do not have a NYTimes.com account tied to your Penn Law email address, select “Create an Account.” Enter your Penn Law email address and select a password.
  • After logging into your current account or creating a new one, you should see a message indicating that your pass has been activated. You will also be given a pass expiration date that is 364 days from activation.
  • To be certain that the pass has been added to your account, select “My Account” and look under “My Subscriptions.” You should see a line that reads, “Your shared access was granted by 896762358@nellco.ip.edu.”

Please note:

  • The site license includes access through smartphone apps for iPhone, Android, Blackberry 10, and Windows phones. After downloading the app, simply sign in with your NYTimes.com login information.
  • Mobile apps for tablets are not included. You may still access NYTimes.com through your tablet’s browser.
  • Archival access through the site license is quite limited. As an alternative, the Penn libraries provide access to the New York Times (1851-2009) through ProQuest Historical Newspapers
  • Passes expire 364 days after activation. To renew, follow the registration instructions above. The Library will send renewal reminders.
