November 21, 2013
BOLD AMBITIONS fast-tracked our distinctively interdisciplinary global initiatives. We’ve brought the world to Penn Law and engaged our students with the world in compelling new ways.

Transcript

The success of the campaign for Penn Law has truly allowed us to put the Law School on the global map. The campaign has transformed Penn into a leader in international legal education. For students, it allows new courses like our global research seminar, that takes students and faculty together to places around the world to conduct research as part an academic seminar. A few years ago, I took 12 students to Northern Uganda to research post-conflict justice there and to develop a report for the Ugandan government on the establishment of domestic courts to hold rebel leaders accountable. We met with government officials, with rebels, with international actors and put together a plan for the government. Other seminars have taken students and faculty to India to research intellectual property law, to Japan to study international finance, and to Italy to look at Italian corporate law. The campaign has also allowed us to bring the world here to Penn Law. Bok Visiting Distingused Professors from countries including China and the U.K., France and Chile, now routinely come to Philadelphia teach short courses at Penn, interact with students and faculty.

For me personally, the campaign has also meant the ability to travel, to conduct research, to speak at conferences on issues of global governance, human rights, and international law in China, South Africa, and Brazil, just to name a few. The generosity of our donors and alumni have allowed us not only to become real leaders in international education, but more generally to always be able to put the needs of students and the research goals of faculty first. Thank you for your support.
