#186 Roles in Canvas

In each Canvas course there a number of Course-level roles that you can set to determine each user’s permissions in the course. Course-level roles are set for each user when they are added to the course and can be viewed in the People page of your course. Course-level roles include the following:

  • Student – Students have the ability to submit assignments, post to the discussion board, and interact with any tool that instructors make available to them. Students cannot access a course until it is published.

  • Teacher –Teachers are basically course admins and have control over the course.

  • TA – TAs are very similar to teachers in the sense of permissions, except TAs should not have access to SIS data. TAs are meant to help the teacher and provide support. Admins can grant certain permissions to TAs, like grading, or not allow the TA to grade.

  • Designer – Designers should have access to at least using the course content, creating discussions, announcements, assignments, quizzes, and other content filled features. Designers cannot access grades or add/remove other users.

  • Observer – Observers have the least amount of permissions. They have limited permissions that allow them to see what is going on in a course without interrupting the flow of daily course communication.
