Public Service Cover Letter Review

June 16, 2013

If you plan to apply to public interest and/or government positions, please plan to submit your cover letter for review. CP&P is holding a dedicated public service cover letter review period through June 20 for students preparing applications for the fall recruiting cycle. Of course, we are happy to support you throughout the year as you decide to pursue particular opportunities that arise.

As noted on the public interest job search webpage, “the important thing to remember when writing a cover letter is that you want to be as specific as possible about why you are interested in the particular organization or agency and the work they do. You also want to indicate if and when you will be in their city and available for an interview. If you will not be in that city any time soon, offer to schedule a telephone interview in the meantime.”

Cover letters for public service positions can also tend to be longer than cover letters intended for private practice law firms. Please review the samples online for a sense of the length and level of detail recommended, and reach out to CP&P counselors Tory Messina or Kathy McDonnell with specific questions about formulating a public service job search strategy.
