#173 The True Pronunciation of GIF

May 23, 2013

The popular resurgence of the once antiquated file format has sparked a heated debate: is it pronounced with a hard ‘G’ (like “gift”) or a soft ‘G’ (like “Jif”)?

Even though the White House claims that it is pronounced with a hard ‘G’, the inventor of the file format, Steve Wilhite, settled the score once and for all in a recent New York Times interview:

“The Oxford English Dictionary accepts both pronunciations,” Mr. Wilhite conceded. “They are wrong. It is a soft ‘G,’ pronounced ‘jif.’ End of story.”

Steve Wilhite was recently honored with a lifetime achievement award at the 2013 Webbys, where Penn Law’s website was also recognized by winning the People’s Voice award for best website in the Law category.
