Public interest students are usually heavily involved in pro bono work and in internships and externships. One of the things I recommend is make sure you are getting the most out of those experiences by building those relationships; asking a supervisor if you can go to coffee; asking them questions about their career path; about their life experience as a lawyer; about what their work entails, some of the challenges, some of the joys; and make sure to keep the conversation going. So really, what we are talking about here is having conversations, making friends with people and building relationships. In the end, this is all networking, but these are sort of less scary ways of going about building your network. It’s really just about making friends with people you are already in relationships with.
