#34 Change the Column Width to Automatically Fit the Contents

March 10, 2011

Sizing columns in your Excel worksheet can be a challenge. If columns are too narrow, your data may be truncated or appear as number signs. If they’re too wide, more important information can be pushed off your screen. Let Excel do the work for you by using AutoFit to automatically re-size your columns to fit the contents.

  • Select the columns you wish to resize.
  • On the Home tab, in the Cells group, click Format.
  • Under Cell Size, click AutoFit Column Width.

Extra Tip: Resize even faster by hovering over the right edge of a column and double-clicking when a two-headed arrow appears.
