#94 Find When Your Incoming Mail was Sent

December 13, 2011

Everyday, billions of emails are sent around the world. When email servers attempt to deliver messages, they typically check for confirmation that the recipient’s server successfully received the message.

This process normally happens almost instantaeously and the Send and Received messages times match up perfectly. High mail volume and Internet traffic jams can cause a mismatch as outgoing servers attempt to redeliver a message and incoming servers are unable to respond.

By default, Outlook lists emails by their Received Time in your Inbox. If you open or reply to the message, the Sent Time will appear.

  • In your Inbox: Your email will display and sort by the Received Time
  • When Replying to Email: The original Sent Time will appear
  • When Opening an Email: The original Sent Time will appear (see below)
