Prof. Paul Callister on Generative AI and Finding the Law
Friday, Sept 27 | 3-4 PM
The third year of Biddle Law Library’s Speaker Series kicks off with Prof. Paul Callister speaking on his forthcoming paper, “Generative AI and Finding the Law.”
This work articulates six principles or considerations that any discussion of generative AI large language models and their role in finding the law must include. Prof. Callister applies ecological holistic media theory to understand the relationship of the legal community’s cognitive authority, institutions, techné (technology, medium and method), geopolitical factors, and the past and future to understand the changes in this information milieu.
Prof. Paul Callister is the Director of the Leon E. Bloch Law Library at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law, a position he has held for over two decades. His teaching and scholarship focuses on intellectual property, legal research, and artificial intelligence. Paul holds a B.A. from Brigham Young University, a J.D. from Cornell Law School, and an M.S.L.I.S. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His academic contributions have been recognized with the 2021 UMKC Law Marvin Lewis Rich Award for legal scholarship and teaching over the past three years, and he is a two-time recipient of the UMKC Law Brenner Award for legal scholarship.
