The Journal of International Law welcomes the submission of manuscripts regarding current topics in public and private international, comparative, transnational, and foreign law.
The Journal prefers that article submissions not exceed 25,000 words (including footnotes). While we will consider lengthier submissions, we are unlikely to extend publication offers on pieces that exceed this guideline. Additionally, while the Journal will consider essay submissions shorter than 8,000 words, we are unlikely to extend publication offers on these submissions.
All submissions must be in Microsoft Word format. Submissions must conform to The Chicago Manual of Style (17th ed. 2017), and include an Abstract. Additionally, electronic submissions must be accompanied by the author’s Curriculum Vitae. We greatly appreciate the inclusion of a Table of Contents.
Though we strongly prefer to receive electronic submissions via ExpressO or e-mail, we will also accept hard copy submissions at our mailing address:
University of Pennsylvania Journal of International Law
Attn: Articles Editors
University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School
3501 Sansom Street
Philadelphia, PA 19104-6204
All hard copy submissions become the property of the Journal and will not be returned to the author.
Please provide a brief, publishable Abstract of between 150 and 300 words summarizing the contents of the submission.
References and Footnotes
Citations must be placed in footnotes (no parenthetical citation in text or endnotes) and must conform to The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation (20th ed. 2015). Because all citations must be verifiable by the editors, all sources must be readily available in the United States or must be sent by the author upon acceptance of the manuscript for publication.
A brief biographical note (the “star-note”) should precede the first citation of the manuscript. Please submit a current Resume or Curriculum Vitae with each submission.
Tables and Graphics
Tables, diagrams, drawings, graphs, and other illustrations must be reproducible originals. They should be presented on separate sheets in a large size. Each table and graphic should have an Arabic numeral, a caption, and a clear indication of where it should appear in the text. Please refer to tables and graphics by number.
With questions, please contact the Editor-in-Chief or Articles Editors at our mailing address above, or via e-mail at email@example.com.
