Faculty & Staff: Network Printers on KITE
Adding Network Printers (Macs)
IMPORTANT!!: If you are remote (not at the Law School), you need to be connected to Penn’s GlobalProtect VPN before proceeding.
Step 1: Add the Printer
MacOS 13 or later

- Navigate to “System Settings” -> “Printers & Scanners” -> select “Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax” to add a printer.
- Click “Advanced” to begin configuring settings: (if you do not see the “Advanced” tool in the title bar, right-click in the toolbar, click “Customize Toolbar” and drag the advanced tool to the toolbar).
- Type: Windows printer via spoolss
- URL: smb://printers-law.kite.upenn.edu/printername
- Name: printername
- Use: Select Software (find the printer model)
- Add the printer
MacOS 12 or earlier
- Navigate to “System Preferences” -> “Printers and Scanners” -> click the “+” icon to add a printer.
- Click “Advanced” to begin configuring settings: (if you do not see the “Advanced” tool in the title bar, right-click in the toolbar, click “Customize Toolbar” and drag the advanced tool to the toolbar).
- Type: Windows printer via spoolss
- URL: smb://printers-law.kite.upenn.edu/printername
- Name: printername
- Use: Select Software (find the printer model)
- Add the printer

Step 2: Authenticate with your PennKey
- After printing a document to printer, click the Printer Icon that starts bouncing on your dock
- When prompted to login, enter the following credentials - Username: KITE\PennKey (fill in your PennKey username) Password: Your PennKey password
- If you receive a “hold for authentication” error, cancel print job, send document to printer again and repeat above step
Adding Network Printers: Windows (For Seating Chart Printer)
(Windows users who are printing to all other printers should be using the Windows Universal Print service).
IMPORTANT!!: If you are remote (not at the Law School), you need to be connected to Penn’s GlobalProtect VPN before proceeding with step 2.
To add a print queue:
- Hold the Windows key and press the R key to bring up the Run dialogue box.

Enter in \\printers-law.kite.upenn.edu into the Run Window and hit
Enter
- A window will appear prompting you to sign in with your account. Select “More Choices” and “Use a different account”

Login with the following:
Username: KITE\PennKey (fill in your PennKey username)
Password: Your PennKey password
IMPORTANT: Check the box for “Remember my Credentials”
Click OK. -
This will bring up a window that will display the various Network printers. Double click on the printer that you would like to add to your device.
- The printer installation will run. When complete, the printer should appear under Printers (type Printers in search box in lower right corner) as “printername on printers-law.kite.upenn.edu”. For example, if I add the fss-127 printer, the printer will appear as “fss-127 on printers-law.kite.upenn.edu”.
Quick Shortcuts: Single-sided, Double-sided, Stapled
- From the File menu, choose Print.
- Choose Properties.

Choose Printing Shortcuts.
- General Everyday Printing: basic single-sided letter portrait orientation
- Two-sided Duplex Printing: double-sided letter portrait orientation
- Duplex, stapled: double-sided letter, portrait orientation, single angled staple.
Manual Print Tray for Special Paper
- From the File menu, choose Print.
- Select the law-lab printer and choose Printer Properties.
- On the Paper/Quality tab, select Manually Feed in Tray 1 as your Paper Source.
Automatic Stapling
- From the File menu, choose Print.
- Choose Properties.
- Choose Printing Shortcuts and verify your document orientation is correct (i.e. portrait or landscape).

Choose Output.
- Options: One staple vertical, One staple angled, Two staples, Three staples, Six staples.
- Staples will print on the left column by default.
- See image in top right corner of Output menu for how staples will be put in document.
General Notes
- Powersave: The MFP units will go into sleep mode between 7:30PM and 7:30AM when idle. During this time select the Start button to initiate power up from sleep mode.
- Reset: To logout of the printer. When beginning a new job or session select RESET to clear any settings changed in the previous session
- Feeding Paper: Face down in the feeder tray
