Canvas: New User Interface Coming May 6
A new Canvas user interface (UI) will be rolled out on Friday, May 6. When you login to Canvas, you’ll see an updated layout for your Dashboard and a different location for the Global Navigation Menu.
There are two major differences between the old and new Canvas interfaces:
- The Global Navigation Menu has been moved from the top of the page to the left side of the page.
- The Canvas Dashboard now has two views.
Global Navigation Menu
The Global Navigation Menu has moved from the top of the screen to its new location on the left side of the screen.
The Global Navigation Menu provides quick links to the user’s Account, Dashboard, Courses, Groups (if applicable), Calendar, and Inbox. There is also a link to Registrar related tools including the academic calendar, block schedules and course lists.

Account
The Account link now shows all your user account information such as your Profile, Settings, Notifications, Files, and ePortfolios. This is also where you can log out of Canvas.
Course Navigation Menu
When viewing courses, the Course Navigation menu collapses on smaller screens, allowing for a more content-focused layout.
Canvas Dashboard
The default view in the Canvas Dashboard shows your active courses represented as colored cards with icons showing recent activity for announcements, assignments, discussions, and files. For more information, see How do I use the Dashboard? (New Canvas UI).
Activity
If you prefer to see a list of recent activities in your Dashboard, you can use the toggle in the right corner to change to the more familiar “Activity” view.
