Logging In

Log in with your PennKey username and password via myCourses at:

https://mycourses.law.upenn.edu

NOTE: If you have an existing Canvas account or if you enroll in a Canvas course at another University of Pennsylvania school, you will be prompted to merge your two accounts. It is recommended that you merge your accounts to centralize your data.

IMPORTANT: A PennKey is required to log in to Canvas. If you need a PennKey, please call 215.898.2589 or email itshelp@law.upenn.edu

Profile & Settings

Your profile and settings can be accessed and edited through the Help Corner menu, located at the top right of every page in Canvas. The following steps to configure your profile and settings should be done after your initial log in and only need to be done one time.

Editing Your Profile

Your profile contains all of your personal information that you wish to include and is visible to other Canvas users through the People menu of your courses.

  1. Click on your name in the upper right-hand corner to open your profile.image
  2. To edit your profile, start by clicking the Edit Profile button on the right side of the Profile window.image
  3. In this window you will then be able to edit your name, title, bio, visible contact methods, and external links.
  4. When you are finished, click Save Profile and your changes will be saved.

Editing Your Settings

The Settings menu allows you to edit personal information such as display name, time zone, language, and even link your Canvas profile to other social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.

  1. Click on Settings in the upper right-hand corner to open the settings menu.image
  2. To edit your settings, start by clicking the Edit Settings button on the right side of the Settings window.image
  3. There are a number of settings that can be changed in this menu, including personal settings, contact settings, and web services.

Personal Settings

In this field you can set your Full Name, Display Name, Sortable Name, Default Email, Language, and Time Zone.image

Contact Settings

On the right side of the Settings window is the Ways to Contact menu. In this menu you can configure additional contact methods, which will appear in the Notifications menu as options for receiving Canvas notifications.

  • Email Address: Along with your @law.upenn.edu, add an additional personal email address where you can be contacted.
    1. Click Add Email Address and
    2. enter a new address.
    3. A confirmation email will be sent to the new address and, once it has been confirmed, you can start using it with Canvas.
  • Click on image to enlargeClick on image to enlargeText Message: Canvas Notifications can be sent as text messages after adding a phone number.
    1. Click Add Contact Method.
    2. A separate window will open up in which you enter your cell number, carrier, and SMS email (which will be auto filled after you enter the first two pieces of information).
    3. Click Register SMS.
    4. A registration code will be sent via text message to your phone and, once it has been confirmed, you can start using it with Canvas.

Web Services

By registering other web services with Canvas, you create different ways to be contacted. The Web Services list is at the bottom of the Settings menu. On the right side is a list of External Services that you can connect with your Canvas account, including Facebook, Twitter, Skype, etc.

  1. Click the service you wish to link with Canvas.
  2. When redirected to that service’s page, enter your account credentials.
  3. After successful registration, linked services will appear in the Registered Services list on the left side.

NOTE: Facebook and Twitter integration is still limited, so we recommend using e-mail as your default notification method.

Configuring Your Notification Preferences

Notification allows you to select how and when you want to be notified of Canvas events. Notifications can be sent to any of the contact methods you configured in your profile’s Settings menu.

  1. Click on Settings in the upper right-hand corner to open the settings menu.
  2. Select Notifications from the list in the Sidebar.
  3. Choose the alert that you wish to configure from the list on the left side of the spreadsheet and choose the contact method that you wish to configure from the list along the top of the spreadsheet.
  4. Hover over the box in which the alert and the contact method meet and select the notification frequency that you would prefer: Immediately, Daily, Weekly, or Never.
