About the Initiative

The University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School launched the Future of the Profession Initiative in Spring 2020 to explore the skills and knowledge that lawyers need to thrive in a rapidly changing professional landscape.

Our Mission

To drive meaningful change in the way our legal system serves society.

Legal and cross-disciplinary perspectives from leading experts

Our network features world-renowned experts that bring decades of deep thought in their fields to drive meaningful conversations about the future of the legal profession. We focus on cross-disciplinary perspectives, which are more important than ever as the boundaries between law and other industries continue to blur. We take a long-term, comprehensive view of the future of the legal profession.

Facilitating important conversations with diverse voices

Our unmatched network of experts, students, lawyers, and leaders from other professions allows us to bring together many perspectives to inform conversations about the future of law — how to prepare for accelerating change and new technologies, how to make the law more accessible and inclusive for everyone, and ultimately, how to provide better legal services.

Bridging the gap between education and the profession

We have an obligation to our students and to the legal profession to drive the profession forward and give future lawyers the skills and perspectives they need to meet the needs of the people they serve. We’re developing new curriculum, projects, and programs to equip students and alum with tools to lead through a changing profession, with a focus on lifelong learning and constant evolution.

Our Leadership Team
