Externship Search
Students can use this Externship Search Tool to search the database of prior externship placements from Fall 2019 through Spring 2020 according to type of externship (government/non-profit) or area of law. Additionally, students can limit the search to either Gittis or Ad Hoc externships if they wish. Students can then see a list of the nature of the work performed at each placement and read prior externs’ quotes describing their work at the placement.

Most of the work I did was legal research that supported ongoing and new cases, and was always really interesting. I did some fact investigation for those cases and new client intake. I also drafted a FOIA request, an administrative appeal in a Right-to-Know case, and an advocacy letter to a local government entity. I regularly had the chance to sit in on local and national level strategy calls, team meetings for ongoing cases, community coalition meetings, and the weekly legal case review in the office. Legal research and writing, cite checking, assistance with drafting briefs/motions, reaching out to prospective plaintiffs, client interviewing. I did a lot of legal research and writing. I produced charts, spreadsheets, and memorandum based on my research for four different attorneys in the office, including the legal director. My research all focused on criminal justice and criminal justice reform. It was split between legislative and statutory research (about 30%) and litigation research (about 70%).

“I conduct research on legal issues related to child welfare. This consists of monitoring state and federal legislation, including writing up summaries of proposals and laws, and analyzing their legal and policy implications. I often am asked to brief the team on the mechanics of programs contained in legislation (like Family First or Title IV-E), especially in relation to funding structures. I also support the Center’s programs by answering legal questions about issues the Center focuses on (e.g., when did a certain provision of the foster care to college program become effective?). I participate in a range of other activities too: I attend weekly team meetings where I get updates about the group’s work, went to Philadelphia Dependency Court, wrote articles on federal and state legal topics for the Center’s newsletter, and completed extensive background reading and an online course on the child welfare system.”

“I had several large on going projects at the CIU, as well as a few smaller projects interspersed throughout the semester. Two of the larger projects were discovery-related. The first was an intensive review of files and documents from a triple homicide to ensure that the CIU’s eventual recommendation to DA Krasner was correct. The second was listening to many hours of prison calls for exculpatory or inculpatory evidence. The third and final large project, unrelated to discovery, involved utilizing my coding/excel abilities (from my previous job) to help the CIU create a more efficient case management system. I plan to continue informally helping the CIU with this task next semester. My smaller, one-off assignments included things like (1) pro se case reviews, (2) legal research tasks, (3) attending hearings (one in which an individual was released and exonerated!), (4) interviews at prisons, and (5) sitting in on meetings.” “I reviewed documents that had previously been reviewed by outside counsel to ensure the completeness and accuracy of the earlier review. I listened to prison calls to see if the defendant mentioned interactions with particular detectives. I reviewed pro se petitions to see if they met the requirements for the CIU to accept their cases or conduct further investigation. I then wrote memos summarizing the facts of the case and my evaluation of the merits of the petitions. I inventoried boxes and wrote summaries of cases related to a major case in preparation for a PCRA hearing. I then attended that hearing. I interviewed the ADAs in the CIU to hear about their ongoing projects.” “Throughout the semester I worked on a variety of matters, all of which entailed different responsibilities… . The pro se cases exposed me to various potential claims of wrongful conviction and actual innocence. Through those matters I also became more familiar with the procedural history of cases and the ways to obtain and concisely summarize trial transcripts. Next, [I learned to] to pay close attention to detail as I reviewed documents for key Brady material. In addition, [other] cases allowed me to recognize the importance in verifying the credibility of wrongful conviction claims, and how difficult and time consuming this initial stage can be. Finally, [I increased] my understanding of false confessions and the importance of finding patterns between these false confession cases to ultimately argue that there was a “pattern and practice” of eliciting false confessions. While working on all of these matters, particularly in a newly established office, I also became aware of the importance of indexing case files and having an organized system to review these files.” “ “I did a ton of investigation work. I read through case files and boxes to determine the investigation needs for the individual cases. But the actual process for reviewing each person’s claim of actual innocence or wrongful conviction differs. Before delving into the review, I take an initial pass at the evidence by doing the inventory, I then do a trial digest and a timeline of all the important and key events. Once I have a general idea of the issues in the case, I determine the investigation needs, which could be anything from re-interviewing witnesses/suspects/relatives etc., requesting call records, re-examining physical evidence, or using photogrammetry to better capture the details within images.”

” I worked … on communicating with coaches, student-athletes, and other constituencies within the Athletics Department about NCAA and Ivy League rules and guidelines. This work included ad hoc interpretations as requested by coaches, as well as research of NCAA precedent for student situations. I also prepared more formal rule interpretation documents that explained rules using examples and plain language to explain the impact of various rules on the practices of coaches and athletes. I was also able to sit in on many Ivy League meetings, which involved discussion of both current rules and proposed legislation at both the NCAA and Ivy levels, including how such legislation would impact the athletics departments.”

“A lot of my work consisted of researching state housing finance agencies’ QAPs, which outline the distribution of tax credits for the Low-Income Housing Tax Credits. I was analyzing the QAPs for their incorporation of the Violence Against Women Act and creating a database of my findings so that advocates could see how states are enforcing the rights under VAWA. I also did research on how states enforce housing discrimination violations in the LIHTC program. The other main focus of my work was on how states review criminal background checks in the LIHTC program and whether any states/localities protect criminal backgrounds in their state fair housing acts. Lastly, I also did research for an attorney in Pittsburgh regarding Philadelphia’s home rule authority. This involved a lot of calling legislative offices and legislative research. I conveyed my findings through meetings and emails, which I liked because it felt much more realistic in how attorneys actually work in practice.”
