Ms. Continue reading… As a Legal Practice Skills Lecturer, Cecilia Silver brings extensive pretrial and trial experience in both the public and private sectors. Ms. Silver previously was Senior Counsel in the New York City Law Department's Special Federal Litigation Division, where she defended New York City police and corrections officers in federal civil rights cases.  In that capacity, Ms. Silver acted as lead counsel on more than 40 cases, appeared before more than 30 federal judges, and handled all facets of trial preparation with minimal supervision.
 
During her tenure at the Law Department, Ms. Silver served as an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Lawyering Skills and Legal Writing at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law.  Before joining the Law Department, Ms. Silver was a law clerk to The Honorable Thomas P. Griesa of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.


Ms. Silver began her legal career as a litigation associate in the New York office of Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP, where she represented clients in a wide variety of complex commercial and intellectual property disputes in federal and state courts.  Ms. Silver also achieved very favorable results for several pro bono clients, including obtaining a $750,000 plaintiff's verdict in an excessive-use-of-force trial and successfully briefing and arguing international and interstate child custody disputes before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and New York Appellate Division.
 
Ms. Silver graduated from Princeton University cum laude with an A.B. in Art and Archaeology, earned her Master of Studies in History of Art and Visual Culture with distinction from Oxford University, and received her J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center.  At Georgetown, Ms. Silver served as a Law Fellow teaching legal research and writing to first-year students and was an Executive Editor of The Tax Lawyer.
