An overview of transportation issues in the United States. Stemming from a conference on Environmental Justice and Transportation, held in Atlanta, Ga., which brought together officials, planners and citizens groups, discusses the interlocked issues of land use, hazardous waste, air quality and transportation affect communities. Five American cities are used to illustrate the good and bad effects of transportation planning, and the legal mandate for, and social benefits of, citizen participation in transportation planning are reviewed.
