Bernhard Goetz shot four youths who had approached him for money in a New York subway in 1984. He was acquitted of attempted murder in 1987 but found guilty of illegal gun possession. Nine years later he was sued for $50 million in a civil suit brought by Darrel Cabey, one of the young men he had shot, whose back injuries resulted in paralysis.
