HathiTrust Digital Library

HathiTrust.JPG

The HathiTrust Digital Library contains over 10.5 million volumes digitized by Google, the Internet Archive, and HathiTrust's partner institutions.

Content

To get a feel for the wide range of subjects included in the repository, take a look at the Library of Congress Classification visualization tool. To browse law materials, look for call numbers in the JX and K-KZ ranges.

While the bulk of the library consists of materials still within copyright, just over 30% of the content is in the public domain and viewable by all interested users.  Because Penn is a partner institution, members of the Penn Law community can download full PDFs of all public domain materials as well as works made available under Creative Commons licenses.

Features

  • Search options: You can use the Catalog Search to search information about the items (e.g., author, title, subject, year of publication, etc.). Use the Full-text Search option for locating words or phrases within a publication. Both the Catalog Search and the Full-text Search allow you to limit your results to those items for which the full text is viewable or downloadable. After locating a volume of interest, you can also do a keyword search within that volume.Thumbnail image for HathiTrustSearch.JPG
  • Collections: Users can create collections of items that can be kept for personal use or made available publicly for others to browse. Examples of user-created collections: Records of the American Colonies, British and Foreign State Papers.
  • Mobile Access: The HathiTrust mobile site is optimized for use on mobile devices. Please be aware that not all of the features of the full site are currently available on the mobile version.

Downloading Full Books

When the option is available, simply click "Download whole book (PDF)," select University of Pennsylvania, and log in with your PennKey and password.

If there is no dowload option because of copyright restrictions, you can click "Find in a library" to see if the item is available for check-out near you. Or, you can search LOLA and Franklin to see if the Penn Libraries have a copy.
