Munich 2018
Activities will include sightseeing around the city of Munich, visits to local museums, sampling traditional culinary offerings, an academic discussion, and a gala dinner, as well as plenty of other opportunities for socializing and getting to know your fellow Law School alumni!
Please note that this conference is open to ALL Law School alumni - LLMs and JDs alike (as well as partners and family). As PCLES was informally re-named the Penn Carey Law “Everywhere” Society by our President during the 2015 meeting, all alumni from outside Europe are welcome to attend too!

5:30PM: Visit to the Bavarian State Chancellery
We will have the privilege to visit the Bavarian State Chancellery which is serving as the executive office of the Bavarian Prime Minister. Join your fellow PCLES alumni for a welcome reception at Goldene Bar.
Saturday, July 14
9:30AM–12:30PM: Guided Tour of Munich
Guests will be picked up at the Sofitel by the tour guide.
12:30PM–2:00PM: Lunch at Augustiner Biergärten
The city tour will conclude with a light lunch at Augustiner Biergarten, a traditional German Beergarden. The Beergarden is located at Arnulfstraße 52.
3:00PM-5:00PM: Academic Session featuring Professor Douglas Frenkel
Join us for this year’s academic presentation, “Nazi Era Art Claims and the Internet: Lessons from the Penn Carey Law Clinic to the German Federal Administrative Court” featuring Professor Douglas Frenkel and Henning Kahmann LLM’99. Transfer to and from Beiten Burkhardt office (Ganghoferstrasse 33) will be available from the Sofitel. Please meet in the hotel lobby by 2:45PM.
7:30PM: Gala Dinner at the Palmengarten at Nymphenburg Palace
As per annual tradition, please join us for our Gala Dinner at Palmengarten located on the grounds of Nymphenburg Palace. This baroque palace, built in 1664, was the summer residence of the Bavarian monarchs for centuries. *Business attire or black tie.* Transfer to and from Nymphenburg Palace will be available. Please meet in the Sofitel lobby at 7:00PM.
Sunday, July 15
10:30AM–12:00PM: Guided Tour of Pinakotheken
Guests will be picked up at the Sofitel at 10:00am for a guided tour of Pinakotheken. The Pinakotheken is a cluster of several different museums housing the Bavarian State Painting Collections, known as Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen. The Pinakothek der Moderne is a vast, striking contemporary building that houses four galleries: modern art, architecture, works on paper, and design (including the largest collection of industrial design in the world). Another highlight is the Alte Pinakothek, one of the world’s oldest art galleries in the world dating back to 1836, which has a dazzling collection of works by Old Masters, such as Durer, Rubens, and Monet.
12:30PM–2:30PM: Brunch at Seehaus
After the museum tour, we will have brunch at Seehaus. Seehaus is located in the Englischer Garten, one of the world’s largest urban parks and known for its 78km of paths that wind through greenery and besides rivers and lakes. Here you can enjoy views of Munich from the Monopteros, a circular colonnade with pillars that resembles a Greek temple.
5:00PM: Public Viewing of the Football Worldcup Final at Hofbräukeller am Wiener Platz (Optional)
For those of you who do not need to head to the airport to catch your flight, join us at Hofbräukeller am Wiener Platz (located at Innere Wiener Straße 19) to watch the Football Worldcup final!

Monday, July 16
8:00AM-7:00PM: Exploring Bavarian Castles
On Monday, the group will head to Castle Linderhof for a tour. Following the tour, the group will take a break for lunch and shopping in Oberammergau, a small town on the Ammer River known for its woodcarvers and woodcarvings.
After exploring quaint Oberammergau, we will head to Palace Neuschwanstein. The royal Palace Neuschwanstein of Ludwig II is one of the most visited castles and fortresses in Europe. The architecture and interior furnishings reflect the historically and eclectically oriented ideals of the Bavarian “fairy tale king.”This castle is the model for Disney’s ‘Sleeping Beauty.’
Tuesday July 17
8:00AM-7:00PM: Visit to the Bavarian Alps: Eagles Nest, Lake Königssee, and St. Bartholomä
On Tuesday the group will head into the Bavarian Alps to visit the Kehlsteinhaus, or Eagle’s Nest. The Eagle’s Nest is a Third Reich-era building, now a restaurant, that sits on a mountain peak high above the town of Berchtesgaden. The outpost provides an incredible panorama view of the surrounding area - on a clear day you can see as far as Salzburg, Austria!
Next, the group will descend from the mountain to visit the most beautiful Bavarian lake, Königssee. At Lake Königssee, we will embark on a cruise of the lake and visit St. Bartholomä, a palace and pilgrimage church founded in 1134 that is only accessible by boat.

Early Bird Rate until May 31: EUR 395,00 per person
Early Bird Rate for young alumni (Class of 2013 and after) until May 31: EUR 375,00 per person
Standard Rate for all reservations after June 1: EUR 425,00 per person
This fee covers all meals, tours, and activities listed on the schedule for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, excluding the agenda points marked as “Optional.”
Optional Extension Programme
This year’s optional extension programme is a two day “Bavarian Highlights” tour. The cost for the extension programme is not included in the conference fee.
The Extension Programme Fee is EUR 245,00 per person (does not include meals).
