Rhode Island
Center for Justice
The Center for Justice, acting as a host site, seeks recent law school
graduates able to bring funding for their work through their own law
school institutions. As a host site, the Center matches the
interests and skills of recent law school graduates with the needs of
the community, to develop a project that is rewarding for the new
attorney, and beneficial to the Rhode Island community.
The Center seeks to develop projects with clear goals and a plan for
sustainability following the funded time frame. Areas of practice
where there is a clear need in Rhode Island and capacity for training
and supervision include: housing, immigration, and workers'
rights. The Center is open and available for informal
conversations about other projects and practice areas.

Public Interest Award
Deadline: March 16, 2015
Open to any public interest attorney who graduated between 2003 and
2008, the award recognizes outstanding mid-career public interest
lawyers, and the winner of the award receives a $10,000 cash prize,
transportation and lodging, in full, to the ACS National Convention in
Washington, DC to accept the award in person, and an award of $2,500 to
the recipient's organization.

Fran Griesing L'81
Griesing, the Managing Member of her law firm, Griesing Law LLC,
was recently named as one of Enterprising Women Magazine's Class of
2015, its 13th annual tribute to top women entrepreneurs from North
America and around the globe. To win, nominees must demonstrate that
they have fast-growth businesses, mentor or actively support other
women and girls involved in entrepreneurship, and stand out as leaders
in their communities.

Alisa Melekhina

Melekhina was recently profiled by the American Lawyer in an article
discussing her thriving chess career that she maintains as a junior
associate at Debevoise & Plimpton. She is one of 12 women to
qualify this year for the U.S. Women's Chess Championship, a two-week
long tournament that will take place in St. Louis in April.

While President Barack Obama answered questions on a variety of topics
at his year-end news conference, one theme started emerging: all of the
questioners were women. In an unprecedented move, the president called
on eight women — and no men. The White House confirmed what observers
assumed: It was a conscious choice.

When we communicate that a vast majority of people hold some biases, we
need to make sure that we're not legitimating prejudice. By reinforcing
the idea that people want to conquer their biases and that there are
benefits to doing so, we send a more effective message: Most people
don't want to discriminate, and you shouldn't either.
