Yvonne Mokgoro GL'90

Mokgoro was recently elected as Chairwoman of the Council of the new South African university now called Sol Plaatje University in Kimberley, South Africa.

This university, which was provisionally known as University of the Northern Cape, is the first new university in South Africa to be launched since 1994 with the end of apartheid, and as such, according to South African Minister of Higher Education and Training Blade Nzimande “is a powerful symbol of the country's democracy, inclusiveness, and growth.  It represents a new order of African intellect, with a firm focus on innovation and excellence.”  The university is named after Sol Plaatje, a South African activist and politician who spent much of his life in the struggle for enfranchisement and liberation of African people.

Mokgoro  is a former justice of the Constitutional Court of South Africa and was appointed to the bench in 1994.  She is a Board Member of the Centre for Human Rights at the University of the South African Law Reform Commission.
