Milgate has been appointed by the Lord Chancellor, the Right Honourable Chris Grayling MP, as an Employment Judge in the East Midlands Region, effective July 1, 2013.

Tell us a little about yourself – your family, your hobbies, etc..
I was born in Montreal but spent my early years in suburban London. Went to
high school in Montreal and to college at Cornell. I went to law school at
Penn, where I met my husband. My husband and I have two boys, 13 and 9.
We like to travel, cook and enjoy dinner with friends. I also love to garden.
Right now I am reading Persuasion, by Jane Austin.
What first interested you in law?
I liked to get the last word in with my parents. My father suggested that I
would like the law. I also always had an interest in questions of legal
philosophy. The realization that I might actually practice law was thrust upon
me by the need to repay student loans.
What is your law
specialization within public finance?
Well I provide tax support for the whole range of our public finance
department. For a longtime in my practice I would have said I was a housing
specialist, but perhaps a more apt description now would be a complex- deal
tax-specialist.
What was the best career advice anyone ever gave you?
Go to Penn.
How (and when) were you first introduced to NABL?
I was sent to the Baby Bond Lawyer ("Fundamentals") seminar in 1989.
How has your participation and membership in NABL been of value to
you and your practice?
It has been invaluable. Meeting people and hearing diverse opinions
reinforces a practice of being open to change and new ways. This approach
is fundamental to my practice.
As a member of the 2013 BAW Steering Committee (and Vice Chair of
NABL's Tax Law Committee),
can you tell us a little about your plans for the Tax Hot Topics Panel this
year?
Well, everyone is waiting for guidance on issue price. It sounds as if
guidance may be forthcoming. We will see.
