Other Funding Sources

International Students will not be able to borrow through traditional government loans; however there are alternative student loan programs that lend to international students with a U.S. cosigner. Please refer to Student Registration & Financial Services’ website for more information on alternative student loans and our lender list.

There are exceptions to the general rules set forth above.  Prodigy Finance offers a loan for LLM students studying in the U.S. and accepts loan application from Penn Law LLM students.  Please note that Penn Law is not directly affiliated with Prodigy and cannot change or negotiate any agreed upon terms between the borrower and Prodigy Finance.  All questions concerning this program should be sent directly to Prodigy.

In addition, HSBC Bank of India has an international loan program for Indian citizens studying in the United States. Also, in some circumstances, U.S. government aid is been awarded to specific countries for specific purposes. For information on whether this is a possibility, applicants should check with the US embassy located in their country.

Another option is The Rowe Pan-America Fund.  an educational loan program of the Organization of American States (OAS) that helps citizens from Latin America and Caribbean OAS Member States finance their studies or research in accredited universities across the United States by awarding interest-free loans of up to $15,000 dollars.

The LLM Education Fund, which is offered by Brain Capital in close cooperation with the German-American Lawyers Association (DAJV) covers the tuition fees and living expenses for the LL.M program.  In return, students make income-dependent payments after completion of their studies. The total amount of repayments is linked to the income earned.  Participants must be citizens of the Euro-area and must have completed at least their first state examination in Germany, when they join the LLM program.

U.S. government loans and private student loans are available to U.S. citizens and permanent residents based on their credit history.

The following funding resources may be helpful to you in financing your graduate legal education. This is by no means exhaustive. Each prospective student is encouraged to explore all funding options available. Please beware of sites that charge a fee to search for scholarships.
