Application Process

Click here to complete an application for the 2019 Institute.

To apply, you will need the following:

  • Completed Online Application Form
  • Application Essay - What is your interest in studying international human rights? (750 words)
  • Academic Record/Transcript
  • Resume
  • $50 non-refundable application fee

Application Deadlines

The application deadline for “Early Notification” (response by February 8, 2019) is January 18, 2019. Students who apply by January 18, 2019 and are accepted will receive $200 off the program fee.

The final application deadline for all other applications is May 3, 2019.

Scholarship Opportunity & Financial Aid

The Institute is offering two full-tuition scholarships to eligible students, as well as a limited amount of financial aid to qualified applicants. Selection will be based on financial need and the scholarship essay. The topic for the scholarship essay (750 words or less) is:

Globalization has highlighted the conflict between specific cultural norms and the idea of human rights as a universal truth. How can pluralism and diversity be reconciled with the traditional idea of the universality of human rights?

Interested students should apply normally, then email the scholarship essay and a brief statement of financial need in Word or PDF format to GIHR@law.upenn.edu.

The final deadline for scholarship applicants and financial aid is March 15, 2019.
