Carolina de Oliveira Haberbeck Brandão’s goal is to impact Brazil’s mass incarceration scenario. Her sense of compassion and perseverance lead’s her efforts towards human rights advocacy and social inclusion of former inmates. Carolina earned a LLB (Bachelor’s of Law) degree from the Pontifical Catholic University and a Lato Sensu Graduate degree from the Getúlio Vargas Foundation in São Paulo. Carolina is a criminal lawyer with vast experience in Brazil’s criminal justice system. Along with participating in numerous high-profile white-collar legal cases, she dedicates much of her time towards pro bono work for families in need. As an impassioned advocate of prison reform and social inclusion, she co-founded an NGO in 2019 dedicated to equipping inmates with the skills and mindset to escape the vicious cycle of recidivism inherent to Brazil’s mass incarceration system. Carolina speaks Portuguese, English, Spanish and French. At Penn Carey Law, she is Director of the LLM Pro Bono Committee and candidate researcher at the International Human Rights Association. Carolina is the Human Rights Scholar and the Potts Scholar of the LLM class of 2022 and hopes her academic background and burgeoning human rights advocacy will contribute to advancing criminal justice reform in Brazil.
