Shira Hereld L’23

Shira Hereld is committed to a future of public service with particular focus on representing vulnerable individuals incarcerated in our nation’s jails and immigration detention.

Prior to law school, Shira received a BA in Political Science, with a minor in Theatre, at The George Washington University. After college, they organized arts groups at a D.C. homelessness nonprofit, spent several years running trail crews with Americorps Conservation Corps, worked at Denver’s first trans-friendly homeless shelter, and guided a wilderness therapy team for adolescent boys.

Shira was the Direct Advocacy Coordinator for Penn Carey Law’s Trans Empowerment and Advocacy project and Symposium Director for Penn Carey Law Lambda. They spent the past year working with Penn Carey Law’s Youth Advocacy Project, assisting youths adjudicated in Philadelphia’s adult justice system. They spent their 1L summer with CREEC’s Immigration Detention Advocacy Project, supporting plaintiffs in Fraihat v. ICE, a nationwide class-action lawsuit suing ICE over inhumane conditions within immigration detention.
