STUDENT AND ALUMNI PROFILES![]() Delceta TaylorHometown:Baltimore, MD Class Year:2009 Prior Education:University of Pennsylvania, B.A Professional experience prior to Law School:Prior to law school I worked in Development and Alumni Relations at Penn. I worked for The Penn Fund where I helped raise money for undergraduate education at Penn. Later I worked as a trainer where I literally got paid to talk! What I Am Hoping to Do with My Law Degree:Something that challenges me every day. My Best Experience at Penn Law:There have so many it's hard to pick one. I really enjoyed the fall "prom". It was one of the last few weekends before my first Law School exams so it was nice to relax with friends before exams began. Professor Who Influenced Me Most:I studied Contracts with Professor Jason Johnston during my first semester and his approach to teaching has influenced the decisions I've made in selecting classes. He was very dedicated to teaching our class common-law reasoning. His emphasis on skill-building makes me think about every class that I register for not only in terms of the substantive knowledge I will gain but the skills as well. My Favorite Course:My favorite course has been Constitutional Law with Professor Kermit Roosevelt because the subject matter is so important. An Example of How the Law School’s Cross-disciplinary Approach Influences My Legal Education:The classes that Penn Law students can take throughout the University really reflects the diversity of thought and experience at Penn. The discourse and students are different in other disciplines and is a nice complement to our legal education. Meaningful Cross-disciplinary Experience at Penn:I am a dual-degree student in the JD/MBE program. Penn Law is known for its collegial environment. Why is collegiality important to a legal education? How has it affected your legal education?Collegiality is extremely important because law school can be difficult and time-consuming. It is much better to be in a place where you feel that you are only competing against yourself and not anyone else. Here's an example: During my 1L year my computer screen broke in class. Not only did one classmate lend me her computer for an entire week, another classmate anonymously donated money towards my new computer. (thank you to whoever you are!!) I can't imagine anything exemplifying collegiality more than that story of my classmates' kindness. My Favorite Philadelphia Moment:Seeing the lights at night on boathouse row for the first time. What I'm Most Proud Of:I am very proud that I have been able to take advantage of classes outside of the law school. I feel like I am maximizing my time at Penn. My Extracurricular Activities at Penn Law:BLSA, Prisoner's Legal Assistance Clinic; Journal of Constitutional Law. What I Did For Public Interest:I taught classes at Graterford State Prison with the Prisoner's Legal Assistance Clinic. It was a great experience because it showed me that if you don't' know something-you can go to a book and figure it out. My Favorite Place or Activity on the University Campus:Lunch with friends at Houston Hall. First year it was a 1L Friday afternoon treat. |
