Benjamin Simler

Hometown:

Berkeley, CA

Class Year:

2010

Prior Education:

UCLA, BAS in Anthropology and Sociology, Computing Specialization

Professional experience prior to Law School:

Technology Advisor to Shorewood Realtors in Manhattan Beach, CA for about one year.

What I Am Hoping to Do With My Law Degree:

Having grown up in the techno-centric Bay Area, I have a natural affinity for the cutting edge. I expect to enter the practice of law as an IP litigator, hopefully with a good mix of patent and copyright cases.

My Best Experience at Penn Law:

After having lunch with one of my professors and some of my classmates (a tradition here at Penn), I was hit by the feeling that I know that choosing to come to Penn was definitely the right decision.

Professor Who Influenced Me Most:

Professor Jacques deLisle has inspired me to see just how ridiculous the law can be at times, and that no matter how much we try and justify the way it works, there is always another way to see it.

My Favorite Course:

Legal writing. I enjoyed the challenge of finding the information I'll need and then using that information to write a persuasive argument for my "client." It's practical and the work is generally interesting.

Penn Law is known for its collegial environment. Why is collegiality important to a legal education? How has it affected your legal education?

I've had friends at other law schools tell me about "friends" who intentionally sabotage each other by giving misleading information in study groups. At Penn, I can be certain that the people I see everyday are interested in learning and sharing knowledge. If I miss a class, or just didn't get good notes one day, my classmates are sure to provide me with theirs. When it comes time for finals, we share our outlines because at the end of the day, we're colleagues working with each other, not in competition with each other.

My Extracurricular Activities at Penn Law:

Environmental Law Project
Law Review
East Asia Law Review
Penn Law Bowling League
Federalist Society
Jewish Law Students Association
