Student and Alumni Profiles

Elizabeth Sheyn

Elizabeth Sheyn

Hometown:

Fairfield, OH and Lvov, Ukraine

Class Year:

2008

Prior Education:

B.A. University of Chicago, 2005

Professional Experience Prior to Law School:

None; I went straight from undergrad to law school.

What I Am Hoping to Do With My Law Degree:

First, to clerk with a judge and then to go into private practice. My ultimate goal, though, would be to head the legal department of a major sports/baseball team or to work for a boutique appellate litigation firm.

My Best Experience at Penn Law:

My second semester of second year of law school. Not only do I love spring and summer, but also this is when I truly felt like I had the hang of the law school experience.

My Favorite Course:

Professor Seth Kreimer’s Constitutional Law course was probably one of my most demanding classes. After taking this course and the exam, however, I truly felt like I could (and should) litigate constitutional matters on behalf of a client.

An Example of How the Law School's Cross-disciplinary Approach Influences My Legal Education

Even though I thought that I would never use my college major (political science) in law school, I’ve had several classes where political theories and schools of thought were discussed extensively, allowing me to apply my knowledge as opposed to learning everything anew.

Penn Law is known for its collegial environment. Why is collegiality important to a legal education? How has it affected your legal education?

Having a friendly and supportive environment definitely makes for a much calmer and less stressful law school experience. The administration at Penn Law does a great job in making us feel like we always have somewhere to turn when we need help or guidance. In addition, the faculty and staff expect that Penn Law students will maintain the tradition of being collegial and the students rise to this challenge by looking out for one another and sharing notes and advice. As a result of Penn Law’s friendly and supportive environment, students like me can focus on their studies instead of being worried about competing with others.

My Favorite Philadelphia Moment:

Eating at some of the nicest Philadelphia restaurants and not paying too much for the privilege during Philadelphia’s Restaurant Week.

What I'm Most Proud Of:

Being able to serve as a legal writing instructor for 1L students. I really enjoyed my own 1L legal writing class and made it my goal to eventually become an instructor.

My Extracurricular Activities at Penn Law:

University of Pennsylvania Law Review, Legal Writing Instructor, Moot Court Board, and Inns of Court. I am also a GA (a graduate version of an RA) in the undergraduate dorms.

What I Did For Public Interest:

I worked for the Animal Law Clinic during my first year and served as a writing tutor for high school students at University City High School in Philadelphia during my second year.

My Favorite Place or Activity on the University Campus:

I love walking down Locust Walk and seeing all the students rush by.
