STUDENT AND ALUMNI PROFILES![]() Kevin SchubertHometown:Memphis, TN Class Year:2009 Prior Education:Southern Methodist University, BS in Electrical Engineering (2004) Professional experience prior to Law School:I was a patent examiner at the US Patent & Trademark Office. What I Am Hoping to Do with My Law Degree:I want to work in private practice in Intellectual Property Law. More specifically, I’d like to litigate patent infringement cases. My Best Experience at Penn Law:One of the traditions at Penn is for students to take their professors out to lunch. During my first year, I got to take each of my professors out to lunch in small groups of three or four students. I really enjoyed getting to know each of my professors – many of whom are leaders in their respective fields – on such a personal level. Professor Who Influenced Me Most:I took Professor Cary Coglianese for Administrative Law my second semester of 1L year. I think Administrative Law is an inherently dull subject, but Professor Coglianese nevertheless made the class very interesting. I really liked how he would read current news stories as well as bring in speakers in the field to remind us of the practical impact of the subject and breathe life into old, dry cases. The class was certainly one of my favorites. Meaningful Cross-disciplinary Experience at Penn:I’m currently working towards the Wharton certificate. I am taking a class at Wharton this semester called the Law of Marketing and Antitrust. It has really been exciting to learn some business fundamentals, especially at such a great business school. Penn Law is known for its collegial environment. Why is collegiality important to a legal education? How has it affected your legal education?Law school is competitive everywhere, and Penn Law is no exception. However, I have found that students here are really willing to help each other out, and I have had no trouble getting notes and even outlines from other students. I think one reason Penn tends to be more collegial than other schools is the ripple effect from such a collegial and supportive administration. Also, most everyone here gets a good job, so it’s not quite as cutthroat. My Favorite Philadelphia Moment:A classmate and I went to a 76ers game my 1L year. They lost, but we had a great time nonetheless getting to experience some Philly culture. My Extracurricular Activities at Penn Law:I’m an associate editor on the Journal of Business and Employment Law. I am also involved with the Penn Law Boxing Club. We practice twice a week, and there is boxing match in the spring in which Penn Law students face off against Wharton students. My Favorite Place or Activity on the University Campus:I prefer to study outside of the Law School. I really like to study at the Graduate Student Center on Locust Walk. The coffee is free all day and there is a lot of space to study. |
