STUDENT AND ALUMNI PROFILES Lauren RobbinsHometown:Oyster Bay, NY Class Year:2010 Prior Education:Brown University, BA Sociology 2005 Professional Experience Prior to Law School::After graduating from college I worked for two years with the Congressional Youth Leadership Council as both a facilitator and associate director running youth leadership conferences in cities all across the country. What I Am Hoping to Do with My Law Degree:I am hoping to ultimately pursue a career in public interest working for a cause I feel passionately about, be it antidiscrimination, civil rights, health law, or human rights. Still trying to narrow that down... My Best Experience at Penn Law:This fall there was the “Great Penn Pumpkin Carving Contest.” Our CSR rep had the fantastic idea of starting this annual event and the administration responded incredibly positively, providing pumpkins, carving tools, hot apple cider, cookies, and prizes for the most impressive pumpkins. The pumpkins then sat on display in the courtyard until Halloween. I loved (1) that this was sponsored by the Law School and (2) that so many people participated and made seriously impressive carvings! It was a great way to take to a break from the books and do something totally silly and unrelated to law. Professor Who Influenced Me Most:I am still in my first semester, but I really love Professor Godsil, my property professor (who is actually visiting from another school). She is personable and receptive to us both in and out of class. She even took it upon herself to set up group lunches to discuss future career options with us based on her own professional experiences. My Favorite Course:Criminal law is incredibly interesting but challenging. I find the social psychology behind this area of law fascinating and enjoy the way the cases force me to question my ideas of just punishment. An Example of How the Law School's Cross-disciplinary Approach Influences My Legal Education:I am hoping to take classes in the Bioethics Department because of my interest in reproductive rights. I am also that everyone has the chance to branch out and take courses in other departments because I think it will provide balance to all of our legal educations and widen the breadth of discussion in our law classes. Penn Law is known for its collegial environment. Why is collegiality important to a legal education? How has it affected your legal education?Law school is stressful enough as it is without feeling like you are in competition with others besides yourself. I knew when I was deciding on schools that I wanted a community that fostered a strong sense of respect and acceptance among students and I think these are two values that are at the heart of a collegial environment. My Favorite Philadelphia Moment:I love people-watching in Rittenhouse Square My Extracurricular Activities at Penn Law:I’m a board member of the American Constitution Society, a volunteer with the Reproductive Rights Law Project, and a tour guide. I’m also going to be working on Penn Law Revue (A musical/parody revue – not to be confused with the journal!). My Favorite Place or Activity on the University Campus:The Graduate Student Center gives you free coffee when you bring your own mug. For those of us on the slippery slope of caffeine dependence, this is an excellent, excellent thing. |
