Hometown:

Cairo, Egypt

Class Year:

2008

Prior Education:

B.A. in Economics and Government from Georgetown University obtained in 2003

What I Did Before Law School:

Before Law School I worked as a Program Analyst for the international development arm of the U.S. Department of Justice. It was a great experience that involved overseas travel and cross cultural experiences. It served as a great introduction to the legal profession.

What I Am Hoping to Do with My Law Degree:

I plan to work first for a large international law firm with a cross border practice. My long-term goal is to find work that will allow me to contribute to international economic development in the Middle East.

My Best Experience at Penn Law:

The 2006 flag football final, which we played in the middle of a raging storm.

Professor Who Influenced Me Most:

Prof. William Burke-White because he is constantly available to his students, whether it is to ask a question about class or to discuss career paths, and even if it means he has to telecommute from South Africa.

My Favorite Course:

Sovereign Bankruptcy taught by Profs. David Skeel and William Burke-White. The class captured a lot of what I love about Penn Law. It was a small discussion based course that took place in a collegial environment where a handful of students were given the full attention of two professors who were always available after class and even brought guest speakers that were the foremost experts in the field.

An Example of How the Law School's Cross-disciplinary Approach Influences My Legal Education:

I can truly say that I have benefited from the Law School's cross-disciplinary approach. I am currently pursuing the Wharton certificate, as well as an LLM in Global Business Law at the Sorbonne and Sciences-Po University in Paris. I believe that the law does not exist in a vacuum, that the knowledge of other disciplines will greatly inform my judgment as a lawyer, and that this will benefit both my future clients and my own personal and professional development.

Meaningful Cross-disciplinary Experience at Penn:

My International Business Ethics class at Wharton, in which I worked in a group with MBAs that valued my contribution.

Penn Law is known for its collegial environment. Why is collegiality important to a legal education? How has it affected your legal education?

Law School is both a promising and intimidating time and I think it is important to be surrounded by people with whom you get along, but whose intellect you also respect. Being able to discuss legal issues with my classmates in a collegial atmosphere but also take a break from studying to talk, laugh, and go out, was very important to me.

My Favorite Philadelphia Moment:

Riding my scooter on Kelly Drive on a sunny day.

What I'm Most Proud Of:

Going undefeated at the East Regional rounds of the Jessup International Moot Court competition and being recognized as one of the best moot court teams in the world at the World Championship rounds in Washington, D.C.

My Extracurricular Activities at Penn Law:

- International Law Organization (Co-President)
- Journal of International Law (Senior Editor)
- El Salvador Spring Break (Co-Organizer)
- Council of Student Representatives (1L Faculty Representative)
- Penn Law Entertainment and Sports Law Society
- Penn Law Flag Football
- Penn Law Basketball (Champions, 2006, 2007)

What I Did For Public Service:

I volunteered at the Philadelphia Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts. Being an avid fan of music and the arts, one of my favorite things about Philadelphia is its vibrant art, theater and music scene. My time at PVLA educated me in the basics of arts related legal issues and allowed me to give back to the community that gave me so much in my time at Penn Law.

My Favorite Place or Activity on the University Campus:

Pick-up Basketball at Pottruck Gym
