Student and Alumni Profiles Tom O'BrienHometown:Port Orchard, WA Class Year:2007 (JD) Prior Education:University of Washington, BA, Business Administration, 2004 What I Did Before Law School:I came to law school straight from college. What I Am Hoping to Do With My Law Degree:Corporate Law, probably M&A My Best Experience at Penn Law:Penn Law has a tradition of encouraging small groups of students to meet their professors for lunch. Eating with all of my first year professors has been my best experience. It was a real pleasure to spend time getting to know them outside of the classroom. My Favorite Course:I have enjoyed Contracts more than any other course thus far. I was fascinated to learn the way that common law has developed in response to practical problems that have occurred when agreements between parties goes awry. The concepts and underlying cases were all very interesting to me and Professor Madison had an economics-based approach to the class that I found appealing. What Three Words or Phrases Would You Use to Describe Penn Law?Challenging, collegial, and the overall best place in the country to go to law school. Penn Law is Known for Its Collegiality. Why Should That Be Important to Law Students?Collegiality is important because legal education itself is so demanding. Students study long hours to learn difficult material which they are accountable to understand in intricate detail. They spend entire semesters with the same students, day in and day out. Under these circumstances it would be impossible to divorce an individual's outlook with the atmosphere around him or her. At Penn Law students are friendly, respectful, and care about one another. Similarly, the faculty and administration are friendly, helpful, and accessible. Being around people who are happy and genuinely enjoy what they are doing is invaluable. The culture here is contagious. What Do You Wish You Had Known Before Starting Law School?I wish I had known that I would actually enjoy law school, and have time for other activities. It would have assuaged a lot of fears I had coming in. My Favorite Philadelphia Moment:One of the very first things I did when I relocated to Philadelphia was run alongside the Schuylkill and up the Art Museum steps. Rocky had it right. The museum itself is beautiful and from the top of the steps is a commanding view of the parkway and Philadelphia skyline. I recommend everyone experience this at least once. What I'm Most Proud Of:I was most proud of making the Law Review. My Extracurricular Activities at Penn Law:Penn Law Flag Football, Penn Law Basketball, Council of Student Representatives Treasurer, Class of 2007 Faculty Representative, Morris Fellow, Associate Editor on the Law Review. My Favorite Place or Activity on the University Campus:My favorite place on campus is the Locust Walk. Great architecture and there is always something going on. Based on Your Experience Visiting Other Schools, How is Penn Law Different? There were a lot of different things I liked about Penn, the reputation, the interdisciplinary approach, the location. But when it came time to make my decision, I couldn't get over the feeling that every student I talked to loved going to school at Penn Law. |
