Angie Louie

Angie Louie

Hometown:

New York City

Class Year:

2008

Prior Education:

University of Pennsylvania, BA

Professional experience prior to Law School:

Development at Boys & Girls Clubs of Philadelphia.

What I Am Hoping to Do with My Law Degree:

Become an appellate lawyer and maybe even argue before the Supreme Court of the United States one day.

My Best Experience at Penn Law:

Having study sessions with two of my closest friends in law school throughout the past three years. Even though we no longer take all our classes together (unlike 1L year when we were in the same section) we always get together for the classes we have in common. It's good to have such a strong and steady support system that's lasted so long.

Professor Who Influenced Me Most:

Professor Reed Shuldiner. He was always available to answer questions, and when he personally took time out of his schedule and guided me through my comment and clerkship process, I realized that the professors at Penn Law really care about the success of their students.

Also, his excitement about tax policy is contagious.

My Favorite Course:

Tax Policy with Professors Knoll, Sanchirico, and Shuldiner. We read upcoming tax policy articles in that class and had the opportunity to discuss these articles with the authors, who were leading academics in this field. The class provided us with the rare opportunity to have great discussions with people who were actually influencing policy. In addition, the professors encouraged us to think critically about the issues and even question the authors approach to policy. The class really changed my thinking about how policy is made and how it impacts every day citizens of this country.

Penn Law is known for its collegial environment. Why is collegiality important to a legal education? How has it affected your legal education?

All three years of law school is hard, each with its different challenges. It's important to know that everyone is going through the same thing, and that we all stand behind each other. During interview season my 2L year, I noticed that all my classmates not only said words of encouragement to each other in between interviews, but were also willing to share their notes with classmates who had to miss class because of interviews. It sounds cheesy, but makes all the difference when you're hot, exhausted, and headed to your fifth interview of the day to see a smiling and friendly face in the halls.

My Favorite Philadelphia Moment:

Buying apples at the Rittenhouse Farmers Market on Saturdays.

What I'm Most Proud Of:

Representing a client at an administrative law hearing for the Guild Food Stamp Clinic. The client was required to pay back over $4,000 in food stamps overpayment and I (unsuccessfully) argued that the Department of Welfare had violated her procedural due process rights. I was nervous, but excited that I was actually using all the legal and advocacy skills I've learned in law school to help someone.

My Extracurricular Activities at Penn Law:

Law Review Articles Editor
Guild Food Stamp Clinic

What I Did For Public Interest:

Guild Food Stamp Clinic.

My Favorite Place or Activity on the University Campus:

Sitting in the law school courtyard with my friends and discussing life, politics, and whether the squirrels are rabid.
