Timothy Stephen Jenkins

Hometown:

Matthews, NC (a suburb of Charlotte, NC)

Class Year:

2011

Prior Education:

Boston University, BA in Philosophy and Psychology

Professional Experience Prior to Law School:

Student, interned at Alston & Bird LLP one summer during high school, restaurant manager, and some non-profit work.

What I Am Hoping to Do with My Law Degree:

Practice intellectual property law – hopefully in-house in a production studio like Pixar, Inc. or work at a mid-size firm in the IP group.

My Best Experience at Penn Law:

One of my best experiences at Penn Law was carving a pumpkin of one of my favorite professors Prof. Burbank with my 1L cohort. It definitely made me feel like I was a part of the community. Penn Law makes a purposeful effort to allow everyone to feel included.

Professor Who Influenced Me Most:

This is a rather tough question. As of now, I would say that Prof. Regina Austin has been a big influence. She really cares for her students not just in class but also outside class. When she noticed I was feeling sick one day, she later checked up on me to make I was doing okay. It means a lot to have a professor who takes an interest in the well-being of her students.

Penn Law is known for its collegial environment. Why is collegiality important to a legal education? How has it affected your legal education?

Collegiality is important because it reminds us that we need other people to survive. In so many law schools you hear that people hoard their outlines. I share mine.

In the end, sharing not only makes you a better person because of your generosity, but it encourages you to really step up your game. If I am sharing my notes with someone, I want them to be the best not just mediocre.

I think it is easy to think that law school is one long race to the finish. In some ways it is. But people forget that law school is a team sport. A legal career depends on your interactions with others and allowing people’s gifts to shine. Penn Law embodies this spirit in the form of collegiality.

My Favorite Philadelphia Moment:

I think my favorite Philadelphia moment was unpacking the last box in my new apartment. It made me feel that I owned the city. I still have a lot to learn about this place, but I know that my time here will be fruitful.

What I'm Most Proud Of:

I am most proud of being able to stick to my integrity in all my interactions. I have been told that one should look out for oneself. I disagree. This is the opposite of pride. It is selfishness. Pride is knowing that you have done all you can to help those around you. This is what I am most proud.

My Extracurricular Activities at Penn Law:

Christian Legal Society, Black Law Students Association, Post-Acceptance Committee, Intellectual Property Group, and possible IP initiative with Prof. Polk Wagner

What I Did For Public Interest:

Still working on this, but I think I might try to do some work involving my IP interest.

My Favorite Place or Activity on the University Campus:

I like sitting by a piece of art called “The Covenant” in Hamilton Village (undergraduate dorms). It reminds me what it means to be alive.

What traditions can a 1L expect to participate in?

Pumpkin Carving Competition, 5 % Party, etc.
