Student and Alumni Profiles
Mia Howard
Hometown:
Brooklyn, NY
Class Year:
2011
Prior Education:
Vanderbilt University, BA in Communication Studies
What I Did Before Law School:
I worked for an investment bank as a litigation paralegal. There I assisted high net worth and institutional clients in providing documents to counsel in civil litigation proceedings and learned a lot about the complexity of the global securities markets. I worked on M&A disputes, and handled asset management and capital markets issues.
What I am Hoping to Do with My Law Degree:
I hope to become a corporate lawyer and then take that skill set and knowledge about capital markets and capital raising and take that model to low income communities so that they can build and grow their neighborhoods.
My Best Experience at Penn Law:
My favorite experience at Penn Law has been watching the Keedy Cup Finals in the Spring. The opportunity to see talented 3Ls argue before Judge Easterbrook and master oral and appellate advocacy was very exciting.
Professor Who Influenced Me Most:
Professor Jonathan Klick has influenced me the most because he is an excellent teacher and mentor. I approached him in the spring about summer employment opportunities because I was conflicted about how I wanted to spend the summer - doing research in South Africa or working for the Securities and Exchange Commission. He was such a resource to me during that time and I had a very fulfilling and challenging 1L summer experience as a result.
My Favorite Course:
Professor Klick teaches the 1L elective on Law and Economics, which was my favorite class as a 1L. I have a humanities background and approached the course with some trepidation because I feared I would not be able to understand economic principles. However Professor Klick teaches complex theories and concepts in such a lucid way that all students can engage with him in the classroom in a very dynamic and interactive setting.
Describe How CP&P and the Center on Professionalism Are Helping Prepare You for Your Career:
CP&P hosts numerous seminars throughout the school year to prep you for your summer job search and have always made themselves available for individual counseling if you need more directed assistance.
An Example of How the Law School's Cross-disciplinary Approach Influences My Legal Education:
I feel tremendously fortunate to have Wharton at my fingertips as a future business lawyer.
My Favorite Philadelphia Moment:
My favorite Philadelphia moment was when the Yankees won the 2009 World Series. It was hard to find people to celebrate the victory with but a small contingent of us in West Philadelphia got together and had a great time.
My Favorite Place or Activity on the University Campus:
The annual LALSA party in the Law School Courtyard is always a great time to take a study break and fellowship with other students.
My Extracurricular Activities at Penn Law:
1L Lambda Representative, Williams Institute Moot Court, BLSA Fundraising Chair, Marshall-Brennan Constitutional Literacy Project, EJF Firm Solicitation Chair
What I Did for Public Service:
I am a Marshall-Brennan Constitutional Literacy Project Fellow. Every week I go to a Philadelphia-area high school and teach seniors about constitutional law principles. It is a very rewarding experience and I wish that I had received the same experience in high school.
