Student and Alumni Profiles
Michael Gorenstein
Hometown:
Columbus, OH
Class Year:
2011
Prior Education:
Indiana University, Kelley School of Business, BSB
What I Did Before Law School:
I went straight from undergrad to law school. I was a summer associate in the Disputes and Investigations department of Navigant Consulting, a firm in the legal consulting industry.
What I am Hoping to Do with My Law Degree:
Initially, I plan to work for a large law firm specifically in the financial sector.
My Best Experience at Penn Law:
Realizing how different Penn Law is from the "stereotypical intense law school" that I was afraid I would inevitably have to deal with. Students are collegial, mature, intelligent, and yet still know how to have a good time.
Professor Who Influenced Me Most:
Professor Edward Rock - He is one of the rare geniuses that can articulate complex concepts in simple ways. Professor Rock is excellent at going beyond explaining the law as it is, but also teaching why the law is the way it is and how the law may or should change.
My Favorite Course:
Regulation of Financial Institutions with Professor Rock. A new course this year, the class examines the various regulations and practices within the banking industry. Professor Rock teaches the material in the context of the current economic crisis, and thus it is highly relevant.
Describe How CP&P and the Center on Professionalism Are Helping Prepare You for Your Career:
CP&P has been great: they are very accessible and approachable. They are very knowledgeable and help steer you towards your goals, whatever they may be. Especially in this economy, I think my options would have been much more limited had it not been for CP&P.
An Example of How the Law School's Cross-disciplinary Approach Influences My Legal Education:
I am pursuing a joint certificate program with the Wharton School. Rather than approaching issues from only a legal perspective, the Wharton program allows me to understand the business objectives of transactions.
My Favorite Philadelphia Moment:
The Phillies in the World Series, and the city celebrating its championship drought.
My Favorite Place or Activity on the University Campus:
The Penn Law - Wharton Boxing Club. We train a few times a week and the club culminates at the end of the year with an exhibition pitting JDs against MBAs, with the proceeds going to charity.
What I'm Most Proud Of:
Making the decision to come to Penn
My Extracurricular Activities at Penn Law:
Journal of International Law, Jewish Law Students Association, Boxing Club, Penn Start UP Connect (Entrepreneurship Opportunities for Penn Students)
What I Did for Public Service:
I will be helping low-income families prepare their taxes.
